Why am I getting errors when importing Group Membership? 


There are several reasons why you are getting error messages when doing Import Group Membership. Some could be the settings of the Group and Group type on your siteSome could be the data in the import file. In this article, you will find answers on how to resolve these issues. 



A. Error: Object Reference not set to an instance of an objectClick to see the Error. For this error, you would like to see if the Group in the import file that you are trying to add to the users is properly set to a Group Type. In this case, let’s use “Group A group as an Example. 

  1. Navigate to Manage People>Groups 
  2. Check if Group A group has a Group Type set. In this case, Group A group doesn’t have a Group Type set to it blobid0.png
  3. Click on “Group A then click on Edit Group button 
  4. From the “Type” drop down, select the right Group Type and click on Save Group button blobid1.png
  5. Go back to Manage People>Groups and check if the group type is now showing. 
  6. Run the import again


B. Error: “Could not allocate users to group. Group doesn’t exist within user's organization or at all and group creation is not enabled.” Click to see the Error. For this error, you would like to see if the name of the Group Type in the spreadsheet is exactly the same on your site 

  1. Check the “Group Type” name in the spreadsheet and compare it on your site.

  2. Correct the data in the spreadsheet to the same as the one on your site. In this case, change the “Employment” group type name to “Employment Groups”. Save the changes in the spreadsheet 
  3. Run the import again 

Notes for successful import: 

  • Template name should be the default template name. 
  • Users in the import file should be existing users on Tenant Site. 
  • Ensure that the name of the Group and Group Type on the spreadsheet are exactly the same as what they are on the Tenant site. 
  • Check if the Groups are correctly associated with the right Group Types. 
  • If you wish to create new Groups, make sure that the “Create Groups” box is ticked. blobid4.png
